Travel planning > packing lists

Pack these bags for the cabin (as security measures allow):

Toddler or child's own pack:

  • cuddly or favourite soft toy
  • pack of crayons
  • colouring or activity book
  • stickers
  • small cars, plastic animals/dinosaurs or dolls
  • chewy sweets for take off and landing
  • spill resistant cup
  • inflatable neck cushion
  • wrist/waist reins

Most toddlers love to carry their own pack with a few special things inside. Putting the security harness in their pack makes it more acceptable - a special thing to wear in the airport.

Your cabin bag:

  • Baby B'Air turbulence protection vest
  • front pack for baby
  • first aid kit
  • diaper change bag
  • cotton cot sheet or sleeping sack for baby/toddler (I'm not sure that airline blankets are always clean...so I take my own for littlies!)
  • travel pack of wet wipes
  • bottles for baby/cup for toddler
  • insulated bottle bag or heater wrap
  • disposable or regular bibs
  • formula powder with measure
  • food rations
  • a bottle of fresh drinking water (subject to airline security restrictions from Aug 06)
  • bowl with a tight fitting lid
  • a couple of heat sensitive baby spoons
  • spare diaper bags (for all sorts of sticky messes)
  • a change of clothes for you and your child
  • wash bag with toiletries for you
  • lipstick and a pop-up hairbrush including a mirror. (Click link to buy from Magellans.com)
  • fanny pack containing passport, tickets and money
  • some wrapped toys to surprise your children with (like soft fabric books, plastic dinosaurs, cars, dress-up dolls, puzzles, play dough)

First aid kit:

In a clearly marked container with a close-fitting lid...

  • thermometer
  • saline nose drops
  • rehydration solution (Gastrolyte)
  • paracetemol: liquid for children, tablets for adults
  • sedative* (and suitable measure for as little as 2.5mil)
  • measure (5-10mil)
  • homeopathic remedies including No-Jet Lag tablets for adults and children. (Click link to buy online from Magellans.com)
  • motion sickness relief (I used Bio-bands for toddlers and children aged up to 12 years. They worked really well in the plane and in the car at our destination. Click the link to buy from Magellans.com)
  • sticking plasters and antiseptic cream

*consult your family doctor about sedatives for children on a plane journey.

Diaper change bag:

  • a supply of correctly sized disposable diapers sufficient to cover the period of your journey plus a few spares (I find 5 for each 24hrs is ample)

  • nappy rash cream
  • a wash cloth in a plastic bag
  • baby soap
  • a small towel
  • polythene nappy sacks
  • a change of clothes for baby (particularly a clean vest/singlet or two)
