Top Child Friendly Places to Visit

By Rebecca Subbiah RD, LDN, cPT

February 2010

Life changes a lot when a little one comes along, sleepless nights, endless diaper changes but lots of fun, laughter and daily joys of the miracle of life. Many parents fear they won’t travel like they used to but with good planning there are many great countries to visit with little ones.  On a scale of 1-5 with one being very poor for kids and 5 being excellent taking into account, overall child friendliness of the country, the standard of changing facilities, the ease of public transport, availability of child friendly food and child friendly restaurants and fun stuff for kids to do.

Rebecca and baby in Europe

Here’s a list of some of our favorite places so far:

1. Italy

Coming in at number one: Italy with 4.5/5 overall Italy is brilliant for small children; we were there when our daughter was 7 months old. The country has a great love for family and babies from the young to Grandma and Granddad’s. The Italians are more than happy to assist with getting strollers up and down stairs, getting a high chair in a restaurant and finding food for your little one to eat. The only downside s in most Ancient European cities, baby-changing facilities can be hard in the older buildings.

2. France

France is a close second with 4/5 again the French have a love of family and children, its easy to find healthy and nutritious baby foods or snacks for toddlers in the supermarkets, the TGV has excellent changing facilities, however the older restaurants are not so good. I also have to mention the French children’s clothing stores are fabulous!

3. America

America 4/5 the strongest point America has is its excellent availability of baby changing facilities, high chairs in restaurants and children’s museums and Parks.

4. United Kingdom

The UK again would come pretty highly recommended, with good changing facilities and accessibility of healthy kids foods, I was particularly impressed with the services provided to heat food in Service stations while traveling.

5. Japan

Japan would be 3.5/5 older establishments do not have great facilities and my Japanese friend informed me that often small babies stay home more, however there are excellent parks and families try to take their little ones at least once a day.

6. Costa Rica

Costa Rica 3/5 this is a developing country but its well run, with good places to eat and clean restrooms and with a decent budget for hotel, could be a great family holiday complete with some of the best wildlife in the World.

7. India

India 2.5/5, the biggest downside to India would be accessibility of clean places to change a baby and due to the population and state of many city streets difficult to navigate with a stroller. My Indian family states that small babies and toddlers would rarely travel or leave the house. However it is a family orientated culture and folks love children, and your kid would get a rich cultural experience going there.

Wherever you decide to travel have fun and be flexible if needed find a quiet street to change your little one, pack snacks from home and enjoy the adventure.
