I freaked at the thought of the distances when I got to the UK with a
2 and a 3 year old in tow. How on earth would I get around to see all
the friends and relatives without fuss?
I'd forgotten how frequent the service stations on the motorways are.
They really are well set up for kids so that however long the journey,
you can always take a break pretty soon after someone says, "I need
the toilet!" or "I'm bored!".
I'd just reply, "OK guys, let's look out for a big sign that
tells us when the next stopping place is..." (15 mins
entertainment); then, "Right, here it is! Well done guys you
spotted it. So do you want to stop in 5 miles or 25?" (10 mins more
discussion in which boredom is forgotten).
I found good play areas and grass to run about on and food everywhere
I stopped so long as I used only the motorway service stations. Those on
the A-roads were much less little-kid friendly - but we still got by.
I picked my car up from Hertz in Cornwall, and deposited it at
Heathrow 3 weeks later. They kitted it out with the right car seats for
the children - and a handy rubbish bag too. Now why don't I use one of
those more often? Our car has never been so tidy!
