What's in the bag?

By Maryanne Monastra

“All my bags are packed, I’m ready to go”… if only Peter Paul and Mary were coming along as the child entertainment!

If you’re about to embark on a flight with your toddler and feeling nervous about keeping him/her occupied between take off and landing, take a deep breath and read on.

A bag of treasures

My saving grace for keeping my toddler happy and busy in flight is a bag of treasures. It’s cheap, simple and sure to please.  Tailor your treasure bag to suit your child’s needs and delights.

Books - My daughter is into all things miniature at the moment.  Small books are her thing and a perfect addition to the treasure bag.

bullet

Nik Nacs - a handful of items from the $2 shop. Among them a couple of toy cars, a play phone, a sheet of bright stickers, a blank paged book and some colour pencils.  Each of these I then wrapped up making it all the more exciting when they were unveiled during the flight.

bullet

Paper clips! Pick up a bag of large brightly covered paperclips from your local stationary shop. There are any number of things your toddler can do with them:
bullet

slide them onto the pages of magazines;

bullet

make a necklace or bracelet,

bullet

clip them to their clothes

bullet

trace around them in their drawing book

bullet

arrange them into sets of colours or the colours of the rainbow.

bullet

Lock and key: Children are fascinated by how things work. I was surprised by how long something so simple entertained my toddler. Unlocking, locking, unlocking, and locking! Oh the joy!

bullet

Ice in a cup: Speaking of simple things. When the drinks trolley comes by ask for a cup with a couple of ice cubes. Children love the feel of the ice in their hands and the rattle of the cubes in the cup. Get two cups and then they can practice tipping the ice from one to another. Sure they might get a little wet but it’s only water (and not much of it) and they will dry.

I hope your little treasure loves his/her bag of treasures! Happy flying!
